Najprej družina, nato otrok. Kako delati z otroki znotraj družinske dinamike

First the family, then the child. How to work with children within the family dynamics

Predavanje bo potekalo v angleškem jeziku. / The lecture will be held in English.

It is very important to examine a child’s behaviour and symptoms in the context of the family first. When a child is registered for therapy, the therapist always knows three things. 1. There is a child with a complaint (symptom). 2. There are parents and other family members who can no longer provide the right help and also suffer from the symptom. 3. A pattern of interactions has developed around this symptom that is not helpful. In addition, we know that symptomatic behaviour is often a response to non-functional elements in a family. The family and family interactions can cause, reinforce, but also help improve symptom behaviour.

When parents register a child for help, they are generally at their wits’ end. Their plea to the therapist is »Help my child«. A therapist who goes along with this ignores the family dynamics and its influence on this problem. In many cases, the therapist even becomes »infected« by these family dynamics.

That is why it is important for the therapist to look for the function of the symptom in this family before he or she starts working with the child. Every symptom is a signal. Only when family functioning and its influence on the symptom have been examined can the step towards individual diagnosis and treatment be made.

In this lecture I will discuss these dynamics, the function of symptoms, the principle of contagiousness and the space that families offer to therapists.
